In general it is very easy to look after and maintain a tabletop fountain; this guide aims to give you as much information as possible to assist in caring for your product and ensuring you have enjoyment from it for many years. The article has been broken down into sections so you can quickly view the major points for the maintenance and cleaning process.
A tabletop fountain as you would expect needs water adding from time to time due to evaporation, while undertaking the refill it makes sense to add good quality water such as distilled water to preserve the pump. Much of the tap water has many minerals, copper and led deposits in it which can overtime mark and stain the water fountain. There are products available that can be used to treat the tap water so you would not need to buy distilled water for your fountain; these are discussed later within this article. It is recommended to check the water levels on a daily basis to ensure that the reservoir is filled to the correct level, if the water is low then just add as much as necessary.
(2) Pump Maintenance
The pumps within the tabletop fountains are very reliable and built to last, however over time like any electrical product they will require a small amount of maintenance so your tabletop fountain works like new. Mainly the problems that can arise with the pump is a build up of dirt or algae if the pump has not been cleaned, the tell tale sign that the pump is not working efficiently is if the water is not being pumped around the fountain at the expected rate. It makes sense to do a thorough clean of the pump once every two or three months, by doing this you will keep the pump working efficiently and your fountain will last longer.
(3) Products to Clean the Fountain
There are a number of different products that can be used to clean your tabletop fountain, whilst at the same time there are some that you should not use. To start with let's take a brief look at some of the cleaning products that should not be used. The main one that many people make the mistake of using is bleach, for many people this would make perfect sense but the problem is it is a soap based product and this doesn't work well with moving water as it creates suds and foam. It is best to use recommended products that have been developed purely for water fountains, there are two that are most commonly used, and these are Protec and Fountec. Protec can be used to treat the water whilst minimising the need to use chemicals or buy distilled water, the product will also help to maintain the pump. Fountec will also keep the water clear from algae and provides an easy way to maintain the tabletop fountain. As an additional point both of the products are pet friendly so there are no fears for your cat or pets drinking from the water fountain.
